Tanzania - Landslides and floods

Listen to this page:

Authorities have reported a tragic toll from severe flooding and landslides in northern Tanzania, with at least 47 confirmed dead and 85 others sustaining injuries. The devastating floods, described as the worst in years in the East African nation, prompted the government to mobilize the military for rescue operations to aid hundreds of individuals trapped in the affected areas.

The calamity unfolded near Mount Hanang in the north, resulting in the destruction of houses, roads, and bridges, thereby complicating ongoing efforts to reach and assist those in distress.

While attending the U.N. climate summit in Dubai, President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced her decision to curtail her trip and return to Tanzania due to the gravity of the tragedy. In a video message, she expressed heartfelt condolences to the affected families and directed all security forces to deploy to the affected region and provide assistance.

This unfortunate event adds to the challenges faced by East African countries grappling with the impact of intense floods exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon. Countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and South Sudan have all felt the brunt of the destructive floods, resulting in hundreds of casualties and displacing millions since the onset of heavy rains in late October. The region is united in confronting the aftermath of these natural disasters, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts in mitigating the impact and providing support to affected communities.
